The Landof Light

The Southern Coast of Turkey has many names. Some say this place where the sea meets the land is the “Turquoise cost,” others the call it the “Turkish Rivera.” In the ancient times the Lycians called this “The Land of Light.” Most of the local people use this last phrase to describe their home here in paradise. Many travellers who come to this part of the world either come back often or make the jump to live here in the Turkish sunshine. This place seems to take people by surprise and feeds dreamers imaginations.
There is the best of both worlds here in Turkey. The modern luxury is mixed with old world charm. Here, one can still feel the tradition of the land and have most comforts. This is more true to the Southern Coast then in the centre of Cappadocia or the big city of Istanbul. The islands and bays are filled with history as rich as anywhere in Europe.
All the many things to see and do here make this more than just another resort destination. Yes there are the Bars and Clubs that make up the night life like in most of the resorts, but this is not what most people come to Turkey for. Turkey is a land of a rich culture all its own. The colours are beautiful and seem richer, fuller and more unique. The sounds and smells are new and seem to make one feel very far away. But it is the people that make Turkey such a wonderful place to visit. They are friendly and even caring and this is double true for the Southern Coast.
There is more history here than most travellers know. This was the home of the Lycian Peoples over 5 centuries ago. These ancient cavitation has left its mark not only on the land here on the coast with tombs and temples. But also has help change and shape the world we live in now. The Lycians where the first republic and had City Sates that had rights and votes. Many of the world’s politics have looked back to these Lycian City States for inspiration. Many of the locals know the old legions and will not mind talking about this a much loved part of their past.
This part of Euro-Asia was the only land bridge to the rich trade of the East. This was why so many different armies’ came through this land. All of these changed to couture and have left ruins that add to the history here on the Coast. One can find Roman Ruins, Greek writing carved in stone, Byzantine Churshs along with Ottoman influence all around this “Land if Light.”
Most island holidays have large price tags, to many tourist and not enough interesting elements to keep one’s mind engaged. Not so for this pocket of paradise just outside the realm of the regular traveller. Here everyone can have not just “The time of their lives,” but a life experience.
